Dylan, I think that plowing is a great business. It is a smart idea to work alone for a plowing business. It is a job for just one person. Family businesses are the best way to begin because they can give you great advice after experiencing it. In my opinion, I could never plow, I have gone with my boyfriend before and I got frustrated for him. I was impatient and didn’t want to sit in the truck for hours driving around. Plowing is important because it allows people to get around safely during snow storms. Some bad parts I agree would be waking up really early or staying out late. Also having to go back to a house or place if the storm is bad like the one we just had! Flyers are a great way to get your business name out! I hope he has some more free time in the winter after giving up his business!
Dylan, I thought your presentation was very good. I found it very interesting that your dad was able to start and run his own business by himself. Although it is a common thing for someone to start a business in something that they like to do, not many do this while still having a so called “nine to five” job and be the sole proprietor. I learned quite a bit from this. One, being what I mentioned before with your father being able to be a sole proprietor and have the extra job, and two being the fact the he was able to do this with as you described, little to no knowledge of businesses. In class we talk about many things, but the thing that I feel connects the most with your presentation, are the things about keeping an edge on competition and retaining customers. “By answering and responding to customer calls and providing calls and providing them with work and safe roads”, that itself shows what kind of business plan he has. In class we talk about how it is easier to keep previous costumers rather than to try and “convert” new people, and it seems as though your dad’s business can do this very well.
Hello there Dylan! I think it's great your roommates dad is doing plowing for the community. Keeping the roads safe and driver friendly during harsh and brutal winters like the ones we experience here in New England is a great way to have your name known through the community. I don't know how I'd do being apart of that business, though. It would be extremely hard for me to wake up so early in the morning. Also, your hours would constantly change, with those hours being decided by how long and at what time a big snow storm is about to hit. It seems like your roommate's dad not only cares about the business aspect of what he's doing, but he truly cares about making the roads as safe as possible, for drivers of all ages. If your roommate's dad keeps running the business the same way in the future, there's no doubt he will have a lot more success!
Hey Dylan, I think that your roommate’s dads business is a good one. There will always be a need to plowers especially up here in New England. Keeping the road safe and the businesses plowed out is crucial to the local community and the economy; everyone uses the roads and parking lots. Me myself it could never do this job. I think the hours would be too unpredictable and I am really impressed by the people that are able to keep up with this hectic schedule, especially like winters like we had this year. I can see how it can be a challenging business too. There are a lot of plowers out there and if there are winters like last year when there is almost no snow at all there is little chance to earn and money. He selling his business to his friend was probable a smart move on his part. After 20 years I can imagine how you would need a break.
I really liked reading about snow plowing in this power point project. I think that plowing is a great business, my older brother has a snow removal and landscaping company himself so I kind of have an understanding about this business already. I think with the snow plowing business is a good idea to work alone it is basically a one person job, there really isn’t a need for more than one person. Also I think the idea of a family owned business is one of the best way to begin a successful business because it can be pasted down to each generation an and also each owner can help and give great advice and guidance after they have experienced it for themselves. I know personally I could never plow, I barely even like to shovel snow. I become way too impatient and plowing seems like it can be very time consuming. I fell like snow plowing can be very important because it can allows people to travel during snow storms. I feel like posting flyers and posters are really great ways to get your business out to your comminutity and have your business grow each snow season.
