Super Bowl Commercial

The Super bowl commercial that caught my eye the most was an Audi commercial. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, I also attached a link. The commercial starts off, showing a high school boy getting ready for prom, but as the commercial goes on, we realize he doesn't have a date. Even his sister, who is probably 8 years old, teases him for it. As he is leaving to go to prom, his dad tosses him a set of keys, to the Audi, and tells his son to have fun. The boy drives to prom in his dads prized possession. When he arrives, he parks in the principals spot, then walks onto the dance, and kisses a girl, who was not his girlfriend. He then gets punched in the face and we see that from the black eye that is disclosed when he is driving home. What caught my eye the most though, was at the end of the commercial where it says "Bravery. It's what defines us."

As for consumer needs, it is shown in the commercial, as the teen is driving, that this Audi is an extremely fast vehicle. The ad targets two groups of people. The people that have the money to afford such a car like this Audi, and unexpectedly, targets those teenagers that never have the date to prom. I guess this commercial can give them some sort of hope. I feel advertisers chose the Super Bowl to launch this commercial because it's the one event that almost everybody in the world is watching. I think it got the attention of the people watching the game because it's one of those commercials you talk about with people. "Did you see that commercial where the teenagers kissed that girl then got punched in the face?" "Oh yea! That kid sure had guts!" Commercials like these are conversation starters. I did like the ad a lot. It's one of things where this kid just wanted to kiss his "dream girl" and he was brave enough to do it. It's something you don't often see in the real world, but it's definitely something to think about. I would be very surprised if we didn't see this commercial on TV again. It was specifically designed for the Super Bowl, and if some people missed it to get more chicken wings during the game, they (Audi) has the chance to advertise to new viewers of the commercial. I honestly don't believe this commercial did much sales wise. However, people attitudes might change because of this commercial. Like the teenager in the commercial, he wanted to go out with a bang, and he did exactly that.

  1. I totally agree with you Zach. I believe this ad is designed not to make sales, but to spread an idea. I believe it tries to show the kind of people that drive Audis, such as the “cool dad” and the “cool young man”. It also shows the confidence that one gets just from driving such a machine. This is why he gets the confidence that he didn’t have that probably prevented him from having a date, and made him do so many out of character things. Lastly I think the message you are talking about mainly went to men in general, that they will be more attractive to women because of this car as we see how the girl reacts very differently than we would think she would because of the car he drives. I like the blog, great job.
