I thought this was a very interesting business. It surprised me that mark went from working in an automobile mechanic shop and then decided to style hair and open two salons. I give him props for rebuilding the salon with the same materials that he previously had. That was a good way to save a lot of money. Also, I like how he doesnt think of other shops as competition and that he just focuses on making the shop better. A lot of people tend to get caught up in their competition and always trying to one up the them instead of focusing on their company. I learned that even if you decide to go into a certain career you can always change your mind and switch to something else. In the book they say, "marketing is a long term profitability," and even though this company doesnt have marketing, I think that it will still have long term profitability.
Hi Lindsey, It is interesting to see that Mark has been in the hairdressing business since 1977. It is crazy to see where people get there inspiration for their business at. To see that he started working as an automobile mechanic which is located right next to a barber shop. While I continue to read through your slides I saw that one of his challenges is losing his two first salons through extreme measures of a fire and marriage and still continued on with his business. Having a business in this field can be challenging because its a competitive field. It is interesting to see the process of his business and how it has grown. It is interesting to see how he expanded his business from just a hair salon to a place that can do pedicures and manicures. This is a combination of two different businesses and that is a great field to be in. This shows that the advice that he gives about when first starting your own business you must keep growing and that is what he did. Also managing your money is a big factor in owning your own business.
I found this small business very interesting and I really like how Mark has been the hairdressing business since 1977 and also how he got his business start. To see how hard he worked to get the business started and began working as mechanic. I really liked this small business mainly because you really do not see many male hair dressers now days. I know personally that all the people that have cut my hair in the past have been women. I like how Mark wants to run his hair dressing business his way not anyone else’s, also I really like how a customer can go to Mark’s salon not only get a haircut but they can also get a manicure or pedicure and also a facial. While reading the rest of the slides I saw that one of Mark’s challenges was losing two of his first salons by seriously causes between a fire and a bad marriage and he still continued on with his business I feel like having a business in the field of beauty care or hairdressing can be very challenging because it can be very competitive, because it is so popular. I really like how fast his business and how it has grown how he had expanded his business from just a hair salon to a place that can do pedicures and manicures. The combination of two different businesses I feel is good because some many women like and also enjoy getting both their hair and their nails done.I’ve learned in the past that even if you decide to go into a career that you may love you can always change your mind and switch to your career choice to something else. While reading the text book I read , "marketing is a long term profitability," and even though this company does not use marketing, I think that Mark’s salons will still have lifelong profitabiable company. I really liked that advice that Mark gave about when starting your own first business you must keep it growing and that is exactly what Mark did. I also think managing your own money when running and also owning your business can play a large factor.
I liked how he didn't give up on his dream and was relentless to accomplish it. After losing 2 salons, later he a started another one and made it even better. He went from just hairdressing to now offering nail service, facials and soon, full spa treatment and massages. His success comes from reasonable pricing compare to the quality of service. I like how he strives to make his business better and better no matter what. Mark looks for a people-person, "someone with experience, flexibility, honesty and open-mindedness". This are the right characteristics for someone working in his business. His love for working with hair is what will make his business more successful and more accomplished.
