My name
is Benjamin Nelson. I am a Sport Management major, and commuter from Auburn, Massachusetts. My
dream job is to become the General Manager of a professional baseball
franchise, more specifically the Boston Red Sox.
Since I was young and gave up baseball to run track in high school I always
wanted to get back into the game. However I wanted to have a heavier influence
on the team than just another player. Being the General Manager I would have
almost all the power in personnel decisions. The only person that would be
above me would be the owner, or in the case of the Red Sox,
owners. There are two people that have a lot of success in the position of
General Manager who I would like to be like. Those two people are Billy Beane and
Theo Epstein. Each of these men excelled at there jobs. Beane took the Oakland A's from at team with
super stars but no results to a team that was comprised of players based on the
overall team goal and become one of the most successful franchises in baseball
at the time. His style was revolutionary and it changed the game of baseball
forever. Epstein is credited with bringing the right players and staff to break
the eighty-six year curse to lead the Red Sox to two World Series. Even making
tough decisions like trading fan favorites Nomar Garciaparra and Manny Ramirez. He is considered one of the most successful General Managers
in Franchise history.
Out
of the entrepreneurs that I have looked at I would say that the one
that I admire the most would be Mike Zhang.
The way how he went about finding a way to sell the same product as the major
companies and make a much larger profit shows his knowledge and skills as a
young business man. Even though his methods might be skeptical. Buying product
from China to sell in the United States as a profit. you have to admire his
quick thinking to earn his money in a way the included minimal cost.
Ben, i really liked your post. i also want to work for the Boston Red Sox. At first i also wanted to become the red sox general manager but i am now leaning more to a coaching job instead. i think the job Billy Beane did was genius with not paying for such high price players and working with talent that he would not have to pay a lot of money to. i think general managers should be more like that today so they could use the money in all places instead of paying some players over 50 million over the course of their contracts.
ReplyDeleteBen, I enjoyed reading your post. I am a Yankee fan, but I respect anybody who really loves the sport of baseball. The main reason I really enjoyed your post was because I too enjoyed reading about Mike Zhang. He started the Megastore after attending just one semester at college. You really do have to admire his intelligence. I am a fan of airsoft and me and my friends have saved a lot of money purchasing from Zhang’s company. He was only eighteen when he started it. The way he created it and the steps he took to ensure his success were genius. His quick thinking earned him over ten million dollars in 2010, and projected him to make over ten million dollars a year for years to come. He has definitely earned it. I look forward to reading more of your blogs in the future.
