About Me/Dream Job

Hello my name is Alexa Dunn. I am from Longmeadow, MA but currently am a freshman at Nichols College. Even though I am undeclared, I have an idea of what I want my major to be. After taking a Human Resource Management class, it interested me enough to consider that as my major. The other option is to major in general business. Either way my dream job is to work for a large company. I have always seen myself sitting at a desk in an office and with either of these majors, HRM or General Business; I will be able to achieve that. In high school, I played basketball and lacrosse. After injuring my back in a minor car accident, I decided to stop participating in sports and instead work at a local gym called JCC (Jewish Community Center). At the gym I would take care of children while their parents worked out. It became very challenging to work at the JCC while being at school because the only hours were 3-6 so I applied for a job that was more convenient. Now I work at Abercrombie and Fitch, a clothing store, and their hours are more flexible.

After reading, “ Americans Best Young Entrepreneurs,” I admire Brian Linton. Brian invented a business that helped benefit the environment. This company consists of four employees. By creating a clothing and accessories line, United By Blue, he claimed that for every product sold they would remove a pound of trash from the ocean. When looking at the top young entrepreneurs Brian stood out to me because not only did he start a brand but he is also giving back to the environment and he is only 24. Helping the environment also helps Brian because more people want to buy the clothing/ accessories since the company cleans the ocean. It amazes me to think that someone who is just 5 years older than me has already achieved so much. I admire Brian because most people get selfish when it comes to money and instead he decides to give back. United By Blue had a goal to pick up one million pounds of trash in 2012.

  1. United By Blue seems like a great company. This company really interests me because I have always been fascinated by the ocean and marine life. I have a house in Harwich Cape Cod so most of my summers are spent out on the ocean fishing and viewing seals. I love how Brian isn’t only making money for himself but also helping out the environment. You don’t see that much today. Most people are doing something in order to benefit themselves, not other people. I really respect what Brian is doing because I feel like the ocean really does need to be cleaned up. The ocean makes up most of our planet so why would we litter the majority of our world? It makes sense to do what Brian does and I really wish more people in this world would look up to Brian and strive to make more creative ideas to clean up the world on which we live on.
