Derek Bedard (1st Post)

My name is Derek Bedard and I am a freshman here at Nichols College. I am a criminal justice major and my goal is to become a state trooper when I finish my time here. I have wanted to become a state trooper ever since I was a little kid. I am really just interested in being a local law enforcement officer, but there is much more money in the state trooper position. I know that money is not everything, but I want to be able to support my family adequately, so it is a big part. I have had my mind set on law enforcement for a very long time, and I will never stop pursuing it. One of the young entrepreneurs that I found really inspirational during my search for young entrepreneurs, was Mike Zhang, the twenty-one year old founder of Airsoft Megastore. I am a fan of airsoft, and I have purchased items from this online shop before. It is much cheaper than most other websites and it has a much larger selection than most as well. It has everything ranging from guns to clothing, and all for a very cheap price. I really admire how young Zhang was when he dropped out of college to start his business. He made over ten milllion dollars last year and he is projected to earn over ten million more this year. Airsoft Megastore

Colleen Guthrie dream job

My name is Colleen Guthrie, I and from the small town of Hamden Connecticut. I am a first year student at Nichols College and I am majoring in psychology. As a child I would always tell my parents what I wanted to be when I grew up and my mind would change almost every day to very week, now that I am grown up I have many dream jobs that I would like to procure but there is only one that really sticks out in my mind.  My dream job is to become a sports psychologist and work with either college or professional athletes. Sports psychology is the study of how the mind affects physical activity and athletic performance. And also the psychological care and wellbeing of athletes, coaches. Maybe it is because I am an athlete myself and play two sports at the colligate level. I think it is very interesting to know and understand the thought process of an athlete is before and after they play in a game or compaction. I know from experience that I like to listen to music to calm my nerves and be relaxed before the game begins. After the game I take in all the errors and mistakes I made during the game and work on them at practice and fix the mistakes before the next game. Although every athlete is different. I would personally like to work for myself, I feel that I am better working alone than with a partner or another person.  If I were to work for any type of company I would like it to be a small company, so that way everyone knows everyone and it is a small and close working community. Also the company I work for I would like it if it is well known and has a good repetition for their field of work.

About Me/Dream Job

Hello my name is Alexa Dunn. I am from Longmeadow, MA but currently am a freshman at Nichols College. Even though I am undeclared, I have an idea of what I want my major to be. After taking a Human Resource Management class, it interested me enough to consider that as my major. The other option is to major in general business. Either way my dream job is to work for a large company. I have always seen myself sitting at a desk in an office and with either of these majors, HRM or General Business; I will be able to achieve that. In high school, I played basketball and lacrosse. After injuring my back in a minor car accident, I decided to stop participating in sports and instead work at a local gym called JCC (Jewish Community Center). At the gym I would take care of children while their parents worked out. It became very challenging to work at the JCC while being at school because the only hours were 3-6 so I applied for a job that was more convenient. Now I work at Abercrombie and Fitch, a clothing store, and their hours are more flexible.

After reading, “ Americans Best Young Entrepreneurs,” I admire Brian Linton. Brian invented a business that helped benefit the environment. This company consists of four employees. By creating a clothing and accessories line, United By Blue, he claimed that for every product sold they would remove a pound of trash from the ocean. When looking at the top young entrepreneurs Brian stood out to me because not only did he start a brand but he is also giving back to the environment and he is only 24. Helping the environment also helps Brian because more people want to buy the clothing/ accessories since the company cleans the ocean. It amazes me to think that someone who is just 5 years older than me has already achieved so much. I admire Brian because most people get selfish when it comes to money and instead he decides to give back. United By Blue had a goal to pick up one million pounds of trash in 2012.

dream job

My name is Dylan Guyer and I am currently a Criminal Justice major. Im thinking about changing my major so that i can be qualified and taught in owning/operating a business. My "dream job" would be to open up a gym. I would like to work with one other or more people in starting a small company as a gym. I would work better in a partnership because i would like the assistance and input from another person. I work better  in groups anyway rather then by myself. I would enjoy working and partially owning a gym. I hope one day i can open up a gym with people i know that are as determined as I am.

I admire the work of Sebastian Abondano because he launched a kids toy that goes digital. Its a line of toys for boys ages 6-12 that they can play with physically as well as online. Sebastians website is myfunkyplanet.com that sells remote controlled cars and helicopters found at stores like Toys R Us and Discovery Channel store. There is a wide selection of cars and helicopters on the website that are decently cheap. Sebastian is a very creative and innovative entrpreneur that itroduced a new line of kids toys. After the kids are bored with using it at home they can go online and play with it digitally. Kids will want to collect all of them just to have all the virtually replicas. Kids that go online to play with their toys can interact with others that are doing the same thing. The virtual world for playing with the toys that the kids buy is a good idea.

Dream Job

My name is Samantha Belanger i am from Shrewsbury, MA. I have a younger brother that will soon enter high school in the upcoming year. I have one dog, a long haired chihuha. I enjoy spending time with my friends and doing adventures things like snowmobiling and snowboarding. I love to play sports and my favorite to play is volleyball but my favorite sport to watch is hockey. I am undecleared as of right now but i am hoping to major in general business. My future dream job would be to not own my own buisness but to work for someone else first then move on and create my own buisness after i get a feel for what the responsibility intals. I love working with people so i am hoping to work with other people not just sit at a desk all day.

My dad owns his own oil business which gave me the idea to start my own business. He is a private owned oil company where he works alone and has no other employees. My mother helps out with bookkeeping and organizing payments. My mother also has her own little business. She works for a dermatologist during the week but two days out of the week she is at home in our basement tending to the people that call her and ask to come in. She has had this for awhile because it gives us some extra money.

In the future I plan to either have my own business or to be apart of one. I would like to work for or become a small but known company. I feel as though if you start off small and work your way up with meeting people and being accompanied with other businesses then your industry will become larger. And for me to start my own business would be the biggest accomplishment that i've ever finished.

When reading through Steph and Annies blog i saw a lot of things that i liked. They sell an online magazine that people are able to print out when they want to read it. When reading through there blog i saw how dedicated they were to reaching there goal.

Dream Job

My name is Adrianna Soldevila and I am from Hartford, Connecticut. I am a Nichols College Cheerleader. My plan is to double major in Business Management and General Business. I would like to graduate with my masters in Business Management. I have a long way until I can reach my goals and my dream job but I am determined and ready for what the future holds.

My dream job is reopening my fathers business in electronics for cars. It was shut down in 2008 and my plan is to hopefully have it up and running no later than 2021, four years after my masters. The way that I plan on preparing myself for this big accomplishment is by working my way from the bottom to the top.

I wanna start with a small manager job to get familiar with the job and all the aspects that come with being a manager and owning my own business. Then i will like to move up to being a CEO of a corporation to strengthen my knowledge. While continuing working for the corporation, I will start the to rebuild the business. I would start off small and grow from there. I would like to start off with a distributing compony and eventually grow and have workers who will be able to work on peoples car.

This is my dream job because I saw my father struggle and succeed. He is my motivation and is why I am here at college trying to relive this dream.

Someone else who followed their dream were Amy Jain and Daniella Yacobovsky. These two women were on their way from graduated Harvard Business School and were to go on to be financial analyst. They both had secure jobs at a top firm but that was not working for them. They came up with a plan to start their own business in designed jewelry. They had a dream and an idea and they pursued it. Today they own an online business called BaubleBar. On this website they sell jewelry from designers but at a discount. They plan on launch more collaborations with more designers.

I chose these two as people that inspire me because they had a plan and followed it. What motivates me the most is that they went a different way than what they were studying and working for. They chose a whole different life and job that is working and is what they like to do. Motivations comes from yourself and these two girls motivated themselves to make their project come true. What also inspired me was that they were both two successful women in the business world.

Saurav Chetteri

My name is Saurav Chetteri and  i am currently enrolled in Nichols College. My major is Criminal Justice and i am looking for a minor. My dream job is to be a parole officer or to work with juvenile criminal. I have been in love with crime shows since i was a child and that's the reason i am so interested in the Criminal Justice program. My hobbies are watching sports and i have been known to bust a move. Dancing is my secret talent, that not many people know about. I didn't take any classes for dance just watched people and i ended being a quick learner. I love to travel and learn about new cultures. I am part of CAB, Criminal Justice Club, Retention and Recruitment Committee, Resident Hall Council and I am the Shamie President. I plan on starting my own club.

I don't plan on starting a business but i wouldn't mind having one. Having a business means you are the boss unlike working for a company. People who are the richest people in the world have started their own company and build it into an empire. Also having a business of your own is the right way to go. I am not interested in starting a business, because i am interested in the Criminal Justice Field.

Appleton Learning

Glenn Clayton started tutoring High School kids to make some extra cash when he was attending the University of Alabama. He learned important styles by tutoring kids one on one. Appleton uses a unique assessment to match students with tutors based on their individual learning needs and styles. This is the reason why Glenn's company Appleton Learning is so successful. He knew that he had something special when more and more kids started coming to him for tutoring.

Dream Job

My name is Zach McKenzie and I am from Wolfeboro, New Hampshire. At the moment I am a Sport Management major. I love watching and playing sports, especially basketball. I was captain of my high school team senior year. I am interested in working for Nike corporate in the marketing department. I gained this interest when by taking Marketing for two years in high school. I like figuring out new ideas for marketing that no one has thought of before. I  also like working with athletes finding out what works for them in a product and what does not. Getting input and improving on those product. This is what the marketing department for Nike does. I feel that I would up lift Nike and help them improve their relationship with athletes. I have also thought about running a business with my father. We do not know exactly what the business is going to be right this momment, but we are constantly thinking of ideas. It is only a matter of time until we think of something that no one else has thought of. We are determined to created a successful company from the ground up. I have constantly been thinking of what I am going to do this summer that will benefit me in the future. I am strongly considering Men's Warehouse due to the number of encounters I have had with them. I got them to come and do a "Dress for Success" workshop at my high school last year. I also had the opportunity meet and have a conversation with George Zimmerman's assistant at DECA nationals. I have considered working for Nike in a Retail store this summer as well.

When I looked at the list of America's Best Young Entrepreneurs I saw that there were many entrepreneurs with successful ideas, but there was one that I found catching. Mike Zhang is twenty one and sells recreational airsoft guns and gear online. Mike is inspiring because he wanted to cut the price of airsoft guns from $400 to $150. I found it fascinating how Mike started his business. He convinced his parents to buy a container of airsoft product and began selling it online. Dropping out of college to run his business full time was a big risk but thats what it tasks sometimes to be successful and I can most certainly say Mike Zhang is very successful. To prove it he was projected to bring in over 10 million in revenue in 2011.

Introductions

huhugHey, my name is Lindsey Oliver. I'm a commuter from Dudley and I'm majoring in Marketing and minoring in Business Communications. I guess you could say I’m a good mix of athletic and girly, and when exactly one dominates over the other usually depends on my mood. I love to dance and play sports; I played softball for ten years, field hockey for four and dance for five. Although I don’t play any varsity sports in college or dance regularly, I still love to go out and play catch, shoot hoops or toss around a football and I always attend Zumba on Tuesdays. Sometimes when I’m feeling ambitious, I’ll even hit the gym. On the other hand, I’m like any other girly girl who loves getting mani/pedi’s and going shopping. My dream job is to work for a large, world-wide company, such as Reebok. I could see myself marketing for them in sales, advertising and promotion. A close friend of mine has a cousin who has worked for Reebok at its main headquarters for about seven years now and she has done extremely well for herself. I recently met her and she told me all about her business travels to countries such as Italy, Turkey, Czech Republic, China, Thailand, etc. In college, she majored in Marketing and Sports Management and actually works for a company owned by Reebok called Rockport, which she called a brown shoe company. After learning about what she does for a living I couldn’t help but think, “Wow, that sounds perfect for me.” She then went on to tell me that she was currently trying to convince her boss to allow her to travel to Milan, Italy for two weeks to take a class on shoes. I almost died!
The entrepreneur that I admired the most was Brynn Jinnett, the founder of The Refine Method workout. She is a former professional ballerina, who actually performed in the movie, The Black Swan, and she is also a Harvard graduate. After teaching at many different studios, she had grown sick of the trends of her workouts that ballet classes had put her through and questioned their efficiency and effectiveness. She decided to travel the country and study how professional athletes train, "I wanted to know how the body works, and how you change it well and safely and efficiently," says Jinnett. The Refine method consists of resistance training and intense cardio. After teaching the method for about six months, New York Magazine named it “Hottest New Workout of 2011.” I admire Jinnett because she had a thirst for knowledge and change; she didn’t want to teach the assumed ballet workout class that she had gone through so many times, she wanted change, effective change.

Josh Foote

Hi, I am Josh Foote. I am from Weymouth, Mass. I am a sports management major and my dream job is either to own my own sporting goods store or to be a professional baseball coach. I have dreamed about a having a sports job since the age of seven. I remember telling my parents after one of my baseball games that I wanted to be a coach. Then during high school I decided if I wasn’t able to get a coaching job, I would own a sorting goods store that would sell baseball, football, basketball and softball equipment and clothing. If I was to own a sporting goods store I would either want to in Boston or in Florida. I would want to own a sporting goods store because I have always loved sports from a young age and I want continue to work with sports things instead of going to a job I hate every day. And if I were to become a baseball coach it would either be for the Boston Red Sox or New York Yankees as a bullpen coach. I'd like to be a coach with either one of those teams because they are a couple of the biggest and most storied franchises in baseball. I would want to be a bullpen coach because I love to work one on one with players to make a change in their mechanics or to give them pointers on how to be the best pitcher they can be. The possibility of working in the MLB would be the best possible thing for me and will always be the number one option. If I had to I would work my way to the job no matter how long it would take.

The young entrepreneurs that I admire the most are Bryan Young, Brandon Blair, and Matthew Laster. I admire them because they all came from the same school and one of them dropped out. Its impressive to me that they were able to stick together after school and do something they really wanted to do. Another reason why I admire them is that they went away from something they did not like to something they did.

Brittany Howe

My name is Brittany Howe; I’m from a little city called North Adams,Massachusetts. It’s a stone throwing distance from Vermont and a very short drive to New York.  My current majors are Criminal Justice Management and Accounting with a minor in Psychology.  I’m planning on changing my majors and minors to a major in Accounting and Information Technology Management and a minor in Criminal Justice Management. This may sound a tad cheesy but I watched the movie Untraceable and it influenced my decision to go into cybercrimes.   After graduation I want to get my masters in Information Technology Management. Then I’ll get a first class ticket to the military. I haven’t fully decided what I want to do in the military or what branch. I narrowed it down to two branches army or navy. If I do navy I want to go in as an officer, but I do army I would want to do army intelligence. So it’s just me trying to decide. Once I complete everything off my list I want to work for the cybercrime unit for the FBI.  It has been my dream since I was younger to work for the FBI and to be stationed in Washington D.C.

The Creators of “On the Beaten Path Trail Contractors” and “Texts from Last Night”, I thought were very inspiring and interesting”. On the Beaten Path Trail Contractors” build paths in National parks. “Texts from Last Night” is a blog website that will make you laugh your butt off.

On the Beaten Path Trail Contractors” was created in February of 2011 by a man named Tyler Johnson. He is only 24 years old; he started his project in Fairborn, Ohio. To build mountain trails you cannot use motor vehicles, so they can’t find anyone to do the labor. Tyler was up for the challenge. It created jobs, paying $17 an hour, it now has 63 workers. I thought it was very inspiring because he was not only up for the challenge he’s is also one to thank for keeping our nation parks trails alive.

“Texts from Last Night” started in 2009. It’s about funny texts that people submit. Two people created the website, Lauren Leto and Ben Bator. They started it together while they were in law school. They now have a book out along with a mobile app which will cost you $0.99 or you can get the free version. It is a great website and I was surprised to find out that they made it in college. Creating a company doesn’t require age, if you have a dream you can do it.

Benjamin Nelson

My name is Benjamin Nelson. I am a Sport Management major, and commuter from Auburn, Massachusetts. My dream job is to become the General Manager of a professional baseball franchise, more specifically the Boston Red Sox. Since I was young and gave up baseball to run track in high school I always wanted to get back into the game. However I wanted to have a heavier influence on the team than just another player. Being the General Manager I would have almost all the power in personnel decisions. The only person that would be above me would be the owner, or in the case of the Red Sox, owners. There are two people that have a lot of success in the position of General Manager who I would like to be like. Those two people are Billy Beane and Theo Epstein. Each of these men excelled at there jobs. Beane took the Oakland A's from at team with super stars but no results to a team that was comprised of players based on the overall team goal and become one of the most successful franchises in baseball at the time. His style was revolutionary and it changed the game of baseball forever. Epstein is credited with bringing the right players and staff to break the eighty-six year curse to lead the Red Sox to two World Series. Even making tough decisions like trading fan favorites Nomar Garciaparra and Manny Ramirez. He is considered one of the most successful General Managers in Franchise history.

Out of the entrepreneurs that I have looked at I would say that the one that I admire the most would be Mike Zhang. The way how he went about finding a way to sell the same product as the major companies and make a much larger profit shows his knowledge and skills as a young business man. Even though his methods might be skeptical. Buying product from China to sell in the United States as a profit. you have to admire his quick thinking to earn his money in a way the included minimal cost.

Hello, my name is Nate Roy. I am an Accounting major, so my dream job is going to have to do with Accounting. My dream job would be to work for the Boston Red Sox. I would want to be their accountant and financial consultant for the team. This has been my dream job since I my junior year in high school when I found that Accounting is what I want to do with my life. In my job the GM or the owner would have to come to me for a budget for the team. I would be telling them how much money is already on the books with the players the team currently has and how much money their is to spend on free agents. This would also mean I would have a say in trades with the team as well. I would again have to tell them whether the team would be able to afford it by looking at the contracts of each player in the deal and with the terms of the deal. So being the accountant for the Boston Red Sox would be my dream job and I hope to one day obtain that job.

The young entrepreneur I most admire is Mike Zhang. He took the hobby of arisoft and made it into a sport. He made the guns more accessible by cutting the prices in half. A set used to cost about $400 and after visiting family in China, Mike found that he could sell the guns for $150 and still make money on them. When he returned home he started his company, Airsoft Megastore. Zhang, is moving the company into a 47,000 square foot facility, which is double the size that he currently has. While making millions of dollars annually, he has made the sport of arisoft cheaper and a lot more accessible for people. So by what he has done single handedly to the sport, has forever changed it. That is why I find Mike Zhang admirable, because of what he has done to the game of Airsoft.

Joe Beasley

My name is Joseph Beasley and I am from Eastham, MA. I currently work at Ben and Jerrys and I also am a waiter at a small African food restaruant down the road from my house. I am a freshman at Nichols College and am enjoying it so far. I like to play tennis and just about any and every sport under the sun. I also enjoy off roading in my jeep and have only had one bad experience. I hit a rough patch of sand and slid into a dried up cranberry bog. My jeep and myself were fine. My parents werent mad so it went over well. Explaining to them the situation at first was very hard. My end of cape cod is boring in the winter so we come up with things to do and that time we decided next to the big was a good spot. It wasn't. I plan on majoring in Marketing but ever since I took Microeconmics I've been thinking about taking Economics as a major. Most people find it boring but there is something about it that always seems to catch my interests.

The young entrepreneur I researched was a man named Andrew Mason who is 29 years of age. He invented a online business called groupon.com. It was founded in 2008 and has increased business greatly ever since then. The website offers coupons all over the Internet to assist people in finding discounts. His net worth of the company now in 2012 is 4.2 billion dollars!!

My name is Carter Moots.  I am from New Milford, CT.  My major is undeclared but I am looking forward to finding that out soon.  My future dream job is to obviously own a fortune 500 company, or something to that extent. I want to work for myself just like many people in my family do, and establish my own successful company, preferably a large one.  If it would be possible for me to step right into a large well established company then I would do so if the opportunity sounded right for me. Currently I am looking for a job this summer, but not just any job.  I want one that is out of the ordinary for a 19 year old that will make me a lot of money and teach me about business along the way while creating a residual income for myself.  I am constantly thinking of new ways to make money and get my name out in the business world.

After looking at those websites you showed us, the young people who stuck out to me the most were Jake Fisher and Weina Scott, both 17, who started Switchpod, a pod casting website.  These two people live thousands of miles away from each other  but still run a business together that they started in high school at very young ages.  I can tell that these people have the right attitude to succeed in life, but most importantly their hard workers.  These high school students currently make a really good amount of money just off of this website.  What I read in this article that really stood out to me was that these specific individuals had the drive and smarts to create a legit business, at the beginning of a new technology bubble, so there would be room for improvement and new ideas. It is amazing that people at such a young age can accomplish so much due to their drive to succeed and their pure knowledge.

Hey everyone my name is Michael Miga. But most people call me Mike. A little background on me, I am from Franklin, Massachusetts. Sports are my passion and I love to watch them or play them. I am a freshman here at Nichols College. Right now I am currently my major is Sports Management. I am looking to switch my major from Sports Management to studying Sports Management Coaching as my major. My dream job is to one day either be the head coach for a NFL team or be any type of coach in the NFL. More specifically, the New England Patriots. The main reason I want to work for them is the fact that they are my favorite team. Also they are a winning franchise and a very respectable one and I want to be apart of that, a franchise that knows how to win as well as be complete professionals throughout the league. I guess this type of career; I would be working with other people and for other people. This type of business could also be considered a large, well-established business.
One of the young entrepreneurs that I most admired was the Together We Rise project created by Danny Mendoza from the Forbes: 12 Amazing YoungEntrepreneurs website. I really admired this project because its main goal is to help foster children or children of broken homes. This help teaches children to make there one choices in life. By teaching these children skills such as music, sports, resume building, and other vital lessons, the children will be able to succeed when their foster care stops when they reach the age of 18. To me, I can relate to this because I am an Eagle Scout and in order to gain it I had to do a service project and I did one for a foster house and being able to do something good for others who may not have it as well as we do really does brighten up their day. So I applaud Mendoza for helping foster children everywhere have the same opportunities to be successful in their lives.

Dream Job

Hello! My name is Jeff Winters and I am a freshman here on campus. I am a Criminal Justice Management major here at Nichols. My intentions after school are to apply for any open state jobs that have to do with the criminal justice field. This past summer I had the opportunity to work for the DEEP (Department of environmental and energy protection). Within that department, I was assigned as the head park ranger in Rocky Neck State Park which is located in East Lyme CT. With this job, I realized that the criminal justice field was where I belonged. With that being said, I see my "dream job" as being a state police officer and moving up in the ranks as the years go on. My rank does not matter to me, but what does matter is the connections that I make with the community. So to answer the question, I would prefer to work for a larger company and be a state policeman oppose to working for a private company in security.

After looking at the websites, I believe that I admire the Art Feeds organization the most. this is because a girl named Megan helped with creative healing and also pushed disabled children to perform rehab and or treatment for head trauma. As you can see this girl was very motivated and was willing to help the needy. That shows great maturity.

My Dream Job

Siobhan Burke

My name is Siobhan Burke. I am a freshman at Nichols College. I live in Saratoga Springs, NY which is a relatively big town known for its gambling and horse racing. My high school had a graduating class of five hundred and fifty and I was exactly two hundred and fifty out of five hundred in my class rank. I am currently working on my Psychology major, and a criminal justice minor. I would like to go into the psychology field because I enjoy learning about people, and how they function. People are very complicated and I like to try and figure people out.   I am a criminal justice major because I would like to be a psychologist dealing with people who have at some point in their life been in trouble with the law, or are currently in trouble with the law. With a psychology degree I have many choices in jobs, but I would really like to work with prisoners in a maximum security prison. If I cannot work with prisoners I would like to try to work with the mentally ill in a mental hospital.  Psychology has always been intriguing and a passion of mine, and I would love to pursue a job in it. I most likely will not start up my own business, but if I do it will be a private practice in psychology.

When I looked at the list of many America’s Best YoungEntrepreneurs I saw that there were many successful entrepreneurs, but there was one that really caught my eye. Glen Nothagel is is twenty three years old and runs the online company sellbackyourbook.com. I think I admire Glen Nothagel the most because he started a company to help college students buy and sell back used books for low prices. It is hard to afford college with the prices of college today, but people like Glen who come up with these ideas help people like me afford college. Since I am a college student I really appreciate companies that try to help out college kids, especially during these hard economic times. Glen started out his small business with only two thousand dollars, and a small warehouse. Even though he is a college dropout Glen showed how intelligent he is by creating this online business. I really do admire Glen Nothagel

Blog 1 Rachel DeMarco

January 26, 2012

My name is Rachel DeMarco. I am from Middleton, Massachusetts. I am a freshman here at Nichols College. I chose Nichols because I was intrigued by how small it was. I thought that because of the size of the school, I would have a personal relationship with my professors which would help me do well in all of my classes. Having that one on one feeling would make me stay more focused on the tasks I need to complete. Nichols is not really very far from my home town. It is just about an hour and thirty minutes away.
I am a cheerleader for the football team. The Nichols football team won its first game in three years in 2012. It was a very exciting day which ended with the coach getting a bucket of Gatorade poured over his head! This April our cheerleading team is going to Daytona Beach for the big National cheerleading competition. We are all very excited and hope that we do great!

I am currently undecided with my major. My favorite subject is math which may influence what I choose for a major. I have always been better at math than history and writing. Since I do not have a major, my dream job isn’t something I have really thought about yet, but being a teacher occasionally crosses my mind. I enjoy working with kids very much. I think that they make daily activities entertaining and fun. I think of myself as very friendly and kind so being a teacher could be a good job for me. I would want to work in an average sized elementary or high school where people are fun to be around and love their job. I would not want to work in a school that is in a city or far away from my hometown.

As I searched through America’s Best Young Entrepreneurs, one in particular caught my eye. His name is Glenn Clayton a twenty five year old who attended the University of Alabama. While in school he started a business called “Appleton Learning.” Glenn tutored high school students out of his dorm room. His business grew to revenue of $4.2 million projected for 2011.  I admire him because he was spending 60 hours per week managing his company while still attending classes. I also admire the fact that his company is helping other students do well in school.

hayley

My name is Hayley Clifford and I'm from Upton, Massachusetts. I am a freshman here at Nichols. I recently became a commuter this semester and I plan on majoring in finance. I work at Milford Federal Savings and Loan Association and have for three years. I have learned so much from working at the bank and it has interested me in finance.

After graduating from Nichols, I would like to land a job at either Fidelity or EMC. Both companies are very large and well-known and I believe I would be very successful in a large company. I dont see myself as someone to start a business because I think it would be too stressful and you would have more liabilities than you would just working for a company. I dont see myself being an Entrepreneur, but I think essentially it could be something to strive for. Entrepreneurs have a lot of potential, and put a lot into achieving their goals.

For example, Lesley Silverthorn, an engineer, designed electronics that built solar-powered cell phone chargers to be sold to other countries. Angaza Design was the shop she co-founded. I thought this business idea was very unique and clever. Places like Afghanistan and India dont have an abundance of technology like we do in the US, and that was smart for selling the products and it is helpful for other countries.

The Angaza SoLite

I find what Lesley did to be very positive and helpful in many ways. Upon building a successful business, she also created a way for other countries to utilize clean energy. She made this possible by using solar power to record how much energy they were using, and then they would by the "clean energy" from Angaza. This became very beneicial for the people and for the atmosphere.

Business and Society First Blog

I'm Stephen Hewston from West Haven, Connecticut. I have many hobbies and many different skills. For school I went to Platt tech for carpentry, but my work experience came from a different vocation that is working on installing central air duct work.  Nichols College is my school and I am majoring in history education. I love off-roading with my jeep and drawing. Drawing is a passion of mine and it drives me to further better my skill, and like off-roading, it is fun and helps me learn many new things. I guess you could say that learning is one of my hobbies and passions as well. Whether it is learning how to work on cars, learn anything i can about history and drawing, or even a new language (which I am learning Filipino now) I always enjoy anything that I can learn and anything new.
In this course I hope to become more fluent in the process of using computers for typing, web use, and anything else I can learn because like i said before I enjoy learning anything I can about anything. Since computers are an ever growing aspect of life and work nowadays, attaining the knowledge to use them is more important than ever.

The blog I chose that interests me is the Jeep section of the Motor Trend blog. This interests me because I am an avid Jeep and and four-wheeling enthusiast. Being able to hear about what's new and whats trending in the world of Jeeps and their owners excites me, especially since I am an owner myself. I know that this blog is credible because of who published it, who happens to publish one of the leading automotive magazines in the country "Motor Trend". They review new vehicles such as the new Jeep Wrangler in this video, and many many more fun and exciting cars and trucks.

Blog #1

My name is Zach Levy and I'm from Grafton, Massachusetts. I am currently a Sport Management major. I first got interested in opening my own business when I took a Entrepreneurship class my junior year of high school. The main project of the class was to create a fake business, and then deal with all the revenue and financial aspects of running that business. I am very interested in opening my own pub/bar type restaurant with a sports theme. I love walking into a restaurant and seeing a plethora of sports memorabilia and flat screen TV's. It really creates a great vibe and atmosphere. For example, there is a bar/sports themed pub called 'The Banner' in Worcester, Massachusetts. It has about 20 TV's and Boston Sports memorabilia covering the walls, with one huge flat screen TV behind the bar. I am an independent person and would like to run the business alone but I would consider starting up the business with a partner. My friends and I sometimes talk about what it would be like  Whenever I'm in some type of small business/restaurant, i always wonder what it would be like to own something like that when I'm older. I know that it costs a lot of money to start up a business like that, but if it's successful, it'll definitely be worth it. Also, being the boss means that all the responsibility falls on you and you're the person that's going to be working the most, but I'm up for the task.

I was really inspired by Course Hero because he really changed how students take notes, do homework, and study for exams. The founder, Andrew Grauer, is only 24 years old and is currently a Spanish major at Cornell University and has raised over $2.3 million from investors alone. Unfortunately, it does cost money to see all the exam questions and notes people post, however, if you upload 40 documents per month to the Course Hero website, you receive free access to the website. If you aren't uploading 40 documents per month, it costs $84 per year. Another great thing about Course Hero is that college students can pay to rent books for a whole year.
